Dairy-Free Options in Schools

The KiDS program gives access to dairy-free choices

For years, the KiDS program was working behind the scenes to change the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. In January 2026, President Trump signed into law S.222 which allows schools in the National School Lunch Program to offer dairy-free milk options to all students, no doctor’s note required. This removes a huge barrier for many families and normalizes kids drinking plant-based milk options, whether due to health or ethical reasons.

Why This Policy Change Matters

It’s about more than just milk. It’s about millions of kids finally getting a say in what lands on their tray, whether that’s because dairy makes them sick or they simply want another choice. They’re learning to make choices that affect their health.

For parents, it’s about a weight being lifted and breathing a little easier knowing you have one less thing to worry about because your child finally has something that works for them.

What This Means for Your Family

Your child can ask for plant-based milk at lunch. It should be that simple.

No more separate table for the kid with the milk allergy, or side-eye for the vegan kid, or picky eater staring at a carton headed straight for the trash.

Kids should feel comfortable at school. Having more plant-based milk options can help those with different cultural backgrounds find a piece of home in their lunch.

Many schools aren’t hearing demand from their students or families yet, so they haven’t started ordering plant milk. You need to tell them you want it and the law allows it!

Talk to your school’s food service director or principal. Ask other parents to do the same. You can use this template to send an email. Having trouble getting through? Reach out to us, and we’ll help however we can.
